So yesterday I decided I would start the week blogging about avoiding distractions. For me this is always a balance.
So for me these are my top 5 tips for minimizing distractions and increasing productivity for the busy mom-preneur!
1. Prep & Plan your day starting with getting up, getting dressed and putting on your shoes then making a prioritized SIX LIST
I would say the best thing you can do for your business as a small business owner, or for your life even as a 9-5er the critical step to getting some order to your chaos.... start with a plan.... every single day! For me I use apps on my phone like iCal and acuity to stay on top of my schedule and then I make a list of the top 6 things I MIST accomplish for the day to be productive to my liking. I put the least exciting task at the top of he list and just get to work. Also just recently I have learned that even working at home the act of getting up and getting dressed even to the point of lacing up shoes for the day gets my mind in the state it needs to be in to WORK and not get comfy and watch Netflix while I stuff my face.
2. Set a work hours schedule for the day and stick to your workday schedule
Now in order for the daily plan to work, a set workday schedule is best! Setting work hours helps keep you in line and on task. If you know your work day begins at 8am each day then you can plan for that with a good nights sleep, an early wake up and shower then a yummy breakfast and my greens before I head to my desk to tackle that six list for the day. And having office hours is critical when you have a family, it allows your family the heads up of when it's ok to ask you a million questions and when it's time to be quiet because mommy has to get some work done.
3. Have a designated work space away from your bedroom
Another extremely helpful tip is having a specific work area where you have your office work, laptop, files etc and you can still have all the feelings of heading in to work. After having Karina I lost my home office and moved my desk into my bedroom only to learn later that this was a huge mistake! All of my work time and relax time all meshed together and I ended up losing focus of the line that separated the two. It's necessary to keep work and home/personal life separate.
4.Listen to music or white noise sounds to focus
So for me, I truly enjoy listening to music when I work or paint. It helps to relax me and it helps me focus. Lately I have even found a few apps that are specifically filled with sounds and note combinations that are soothing to the ears and help me keep my head in the task at hand. In addition to the music I time my tasks and I'm good to go.
5.Unplug at the end of the work day, kick of your shoes and relax
And last but not least. Call it quits at the end of the work day. Take a seat, kick your shoes off, pour yourself a drink or have a cup of hot tea and simply RELAX! For most entrepreneurs it may be hard to turn your mind off but if you can.... try to simply RELAX and enjoy the night off.
Even tho these tips may be helpful, always remember you are only human and sometimes we can get a little distracted and maybe of topic a bit BUT be sure to stay in the game and stay positive. And like always..... don't be afraid.... Just Jump!
